Tamar Nix

Tamar Nix is an artist and designer working at the intersection of textiles and technology. Her practice combines traditional craft techniques with contemporary modes of production, moving between material research and intuitive making. Through large scale installations and labor intensive handwork, she explores the body as well as organic and human systems. Her works examine the intersections between softness and structure, industry and craft, technological precision and human gesture.For this coiled barbed wire piece, rendered in colorful knitted textile, Nix developed a custom knitting apparatus using 3D printing technology, specifically designed to accommodate the work’s scale. Using this device, she constructed the entire sculptural form. Made of knitting yarn and steel, the work extends approximately three meters in length. Wire is a familiar symbol of security and insecurity serving as a threatening barrier that is difficult to cross. The same fence that evokes painful memories from both the distant and recent past is also a source of protection. By reimagining this menacing structure as a warm, soft object of domestic handcraft, the work offers a new perspective on the fence and raises questions about its role and meaning in our lives.
