Roy Brand – Sand Printer, Meditations on Peace

The sand printer draws basic elements of form, structure, and symbol - line, triangle, square, circle - in a serial process, layer by layer. Familiar symbols emerge from the sand and are then erased. The action repeats itself again and again, as if seeking to establish a place, to create a structure and infuse it with meaning, only to erase it and begin anew. The series of drawings follows a series of works on paper by Dani Karavan titled Meditations on Peace in Pencil, Gold, and Blue. The sand printer was originally created for the exhibition The Urburb, the Israeli Pavilion at the 2014 Venice Architecture Biennale, curated by Roy Brand, Uri Shalom, and Keren Yeala-Golan.
