THE MAKOV COLLECTION

The Makov Art Collection began taking shape in 2007 as a tribute to Nira Makov, who had passed away, and was inspired by her memory. The decision to continue acquiring Israeli art stemmed from a deep love for the field that she and her husband, Israel Makov, shared, along with a desire to deepen their involvement and continue supporting and promoting Israeli art.
In recent years, Israel has been accompanied by his partner, Bela Lustig, who shares his passion for art.

Today, the collection comprises over 250 works of Israeli art across a wide range of disciplines — painting, sculpture, photography, and video art. The earliest piece in the collection is a youthful work by Marcel Janco from the founding period of the Dada movement in the 1920s. Alongside it, the collection includes significant representation of the New Horizons artists, the mid-generation of the 1980s, and contemporary creators.

The partnership between Israel Makov and the Ashdod Museum of Art was initiated by one of Israel’s leading curators, the late Yona Fischer. As part of this collaboration, a series of exhibitions has been presented in the museum’s collection gallery, and every two years, the museum awards the Nira Makov Prize for the Encouragement of Artistic Creation. Past recipients include Tomer Kap, Hadas Satt, and Lior Tamim.
